Chestnut Tree House

Who we are

Chestnut Tree House is the only children's hospice in Sussex and cares for children and young adults from 0-19 years of age with progressive life-limiting and life-threatening illnesses from all over the county.

Completed in 2003, the hospice provides a 'home from home' environment with 10 children's bedrooms plus 8 family rooms, a wet and dry play area, computer and music rooms, a multi sensory room and hydrotherapy pool. The house is set in beautiful gardens within an area of outstanding natural beauty.

There are potentially 400 families with life-limited children in Sussex. Chestnut Tree House offers support for the whole family including psychological support, care in bereavement therapy, end of life and respite care and sibling support.

It costs approximately £2 million per year to provide the hospice’s services. Families are not charged for their care and the hospice receives very little government funding so it relies almost entirely on the generosity, help and support of the people of Sussex.

The RNLI

The RNLI is the charity that saves lives at sea. They provide a 24-hour lifeboat search and rescue service around the coasts of the UK and RoI, as well as a seasonal lifeguard service on many of the busiest beaches in England and Wales. The RNLI also works to promote sea and beach safety.

Littlehampton has one of the busiest lifeboat stations in the country, with over 100 launches on service in 2009. Sometimes calls are almost routine, although in many cases the crew doesn't know the extent of the emergency until they reach a casualty. Every now and again, though, it is a genuine life and death situation, or the conditions are such that the crew and the lifeboat are severely tested. Most of these calls result in a job well done, and a sense of satisfaction for the crew.
